What Are Hindi Vowels (Swar)?
In Hindi, vowels are called स्वर (Swar). Unlike consonants, vowels are independent sounds that can stand alone or modify a consonant when written as a diacritic mark called a matra (मात्रा). Understanding the Swar is the absolute first step in learning to read and write Devanagari script.
Hindi has 13 standard vowels recognized in modern usage, though traditional grammars list slightly varying counts. Each vowel has a standalone letter form and — except for the first — a matra form used when combined with consonants.

Short Vowels vs. Long Vowels
Hindi distinguishes between short (hrasva) and long (deergha) vowels. This difference changes the meaning of words:
- इ (i) is short — quick pronunciation
- ई (ee) is long — held approximately twice as long
- उ (u) is short
- ऊ (oo) is long
For example: दिन (din) means "day," while दीन (deen) means "poor/humble." The vowel length completely changes the meaning!
How Matras Work With Consonants
When a vowel follows a consonant in a word, it is written as a matra rather than as a standalone letter. The position of the matra varies:
- After the consonant: आ matra — क + ा = का (kaa)
- Before the consonant: इ matra — क + ि = कि (ki) — note the matra appears to the left even though it's pronounced after
- Below the consonant: उ/ऊ matras — क + ु = कु (ku)
- Above the consonant: ए/ऐ/ओ/औ matras attach above the headline
The Special Case of अ (a)
The vowel अ (a) is unique — it has no separate matra because it is the inherent vowel of every consonant. When you write क, it is automatically pronounced "ka" unless a virama (halant ्) is added to suppress the vowel or another matra replaces it.
Practice Tips for Learning Swar
- Write each vowel 10 times daily until your hand remembers the shape.
- Say the vowel sound aloud as you write — combine auditory and visual memory.
- Learn matras alongside vowels — don't treat them as separate topics.
- Find one Hindi word per vowel to anchor the sound in your memory.
